Building a Career in Commercial Insurance:
I began my journey in commercial insurance in 2023, and in that short time, it has transformed my life in ways I never expected. I’ve had the privilege of meeting remarkable people, experiencing some truly unique things, and building a career that rewards hard work and resilience, while offering the flexibility to enjoy life with my family and friends.
A Dynamic Daily Routine in the Insurance Industry:
What I value most about my insurance career is the variety it brings. Some days, you’ll catch me working from home in shorts and a T-shirt, hammering out 50+ cold calls. Other days, I’m out in the field meeting with clients for renewals, checking in just to say hello, or introducing myself to new prospects. And occasionally, I’ll wrap up early to try something new, like my latest interest: golf. These slower days help me recharge for the intense ones filled with back-to-back meetings, problem-solving, and coordinating with carriers.
Embracing the Hustle:
Don’t get me wrong, I live for the fast-paced days too. I love the hunt. I take on more new client meetings in a week than most are comfortable with, and I genuinely enjoy diving into new industries, learning about their unique risks and coverage types. There’s always something new to learn, and that’s what keeps me coming back with energy and purpose.
A Story of Career Transformation:
Before I got into commercial insurance, I only had minor experience in the insurance industry and, honestly, not much in sales either. I was bouncing between lawn care and a mix of trade jobs before landing at a small captive insurance agency that didn’t offer the same opportunity as an independent insurance agency does. Everything changed when Midwest Select gave me a shot. They are known for building the careers of new agents, and they invested in me with hands-on mentorship, training, and support to build a strong foundation. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity they have given me.
Work-Life Balance – Staying Grounded:
Outside of work, I try to stay grounded by spending as much time outdoors as possible. I love hiking, being in nature, camping, hitting the golf course, and most of all, just hanging out with my son and close friends. That kind of balance keeps me sharp and motivated when I’m back on the clock.
Building Strong Relationships with Insurance Carrier Partners:
One of the most valuable parts of the job is the relationships we build with our carrier partners. Over time, they’ve become incredible resources. Thanks to that trust and teamwork, I can confidently tackle the biggest, most complex, or downright strangest accounts knowing we’ll find a solution, and sometimes even learn something new together.
Commercial Insurance: A Backstage Pass to Entrepreneurship
Through it all, I’ve developed a deep passion for understanding business. Each meeting with a business owner gives me a behind-the-scenes look at how they started, what challenges they’ve faced, how they’ve scaled, and what continues to drive them forward. In many ways, insurance has been my backstage pass to entrepreneurship, and it’s one I don’t take for granted.
Lifelong Learning in a Rapidly Evolving Insurance Industry:
This industry constantly challenges you to grow. The standards evolve, the risks shift, and there’s always a new type of business or policy to understand. The moment you think you’ve learned it all, you’re already behind because in insurance, even specialists are always students.
